Summary
"The grandpas are great! Lionel Hampton is 86 years old and his cohorts are only a little younger (Harry Sweet Edison is 79 years old, Clark Terry 74, Al Grey 69, and Benny Golson 65). They have all marked the history of their instrument, if not the history of jazz. They played with Basie, Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Blakey. Benny Golson wrote standards such as ""Blues March,"" ""Whisper Not,"" and ""I Remember Clifford,"" and we hardly need to remind you that Hampton is the leading jazz vibraphonist soloist and was a drummer with awesome swing. As mutual respect circulates between them, these musicians offer us a quality concert far from the demagogy Hampton sometimes suffers from. That being said, as a showboat attracting the spotlights, Hampton comes on stage American-style, like a James Brown, takes a few dance steps on his frail old man's legs, then sits behind the vibraphone to launch the first quick notes that are his signature. And we forget everything; all that's left is musical inventiveness. **Philippe Lesage**".
