"Nu Genea plunges us into the Naples of the 70s with a funky tribute set. At that time, the city danced to the sounds of disco, jazz-funk and world music. However, the two featured DJs, Massimo di Lena and Lucio Aquilina, were more used to producing underground techno. Side note: have a listen to the Hardlife EP or to the track ""Magic M,"" signed on Sven Väth's label! Originally from the Neapolitan region and now living together in Berlin, the two friends have somewhat abandoned the turntables and clubs to get closer to the essence of the rhythms that makes people dance. The pair were able to work with one of the masters in the field, Fela's legendary drummer Tony Allen, on their album The Tony Allen Experiments. After, the album Nuova Napoli, released in 2018, sounded like a return to their roots, modernising the colourful heritage of their hometown. After two sold-out concerts at the New Morning, Nu Genea performed here at the Nuits Sonores festival, accompanied by a funky band. The Italian duo were joined by a charismatic singer and five musicians, brilliantly rising to the challenge - not easy for producers more familiar with electronics - of putting together a real live band and performing on stage. With funk bass lines, groovy guitar and keyboard riffs, supported by drums and house-nu disco percussion, Nu Genea transports us into beautiful atmospheres, sometimes catchy, sometimes lustful and sultry, echoing the beauties of the city of sunshine.
