Summary
"This is an artist who is rightly lauded at the top of her craft, as a jazz singer whose been there and seen it all. As a young woman, she followed a burgeoning love for jazz all the way to the bright lights of New York, where she performed alongside Charles Mingus, Herbie Nichols, and Charlie Parker (who called her the ""singer with the million-dollar ears"") in the 1950s. But more than experience, it is her skill level that means she is rightly judged as one of the best of her generation - she is a superb scat singer but can also hit ballad highs and crooning lows like no one else, having made standards her own throughout her career. Here, we see her in a familiar format, where she is joined by double bassist Peter Herbert - her pioneering preference for prominent bass/voice mixes led to several such collaborations in her career, notably with Arild Andersen, Harvie S, and Cameron Brown. They are joined by pianist Renato Chicco whose melodies sound delicate and powerful, adding some extra color to proceedings. In a performance not to be missed, Sheila Jordan is as captivating with her personality as she is with her voice, proving once again why she is considered among the most consistently creative of all time jazz singers. **Rowan Standish Hayes**".
