Summary
The first letter discusses an unsuccessful attempt to sail to Sicily from Naples. The other letters were written from Rome and mention travel elsewhere in Italy; the last letter gives a description of the city with reference to geography, population, the Tiber, antiquities, the Pantheon, and Saint Peter's Basilica. Typical of other accounts from the period, Clayton gives the measurements of Saint Peter's. In each letter, he conveys the compliments of a Mr Moll, presumably his tutor (possibly the cartographer Herman Moll).
