Summary
An amusing letter about Gell's travel in Italy: We have been taken murdered sacked bombarded threatened executed pillaged & any thinged which is usual in conquered states. He laments his gout and mentions the opera, the Polish Prince Leopold, Princess Charlotte's fury about going to Trieste, the Bay of Sorrento, and Francavilla Garden. Gell also announces the arrival for tea of John Chetwode Eustace & his classical tour, a reference to Eustace's very popular A Classical Tour through Italy, the newly titled 3rd edition of his Tour through Italy, the standard guidebook for English travellers in the early nineteenth century. The letter also contains a sketch and comical description of a mule being unloaded from a ship.
