Summary
The sculptor Flaxman describes the appearance of Carrara and surrounding mountains, as well as the marble quarries and marble trade. Flaxman notes that he is preparing a model for the Academy of Design in Florence and asks Clark to mention this Giovanni Bastianelli. Flaxman also mentions Guy Head, Miss Ruddle, and Frances Bowdler, and also Mariana Starke, who wrote Letters from Italy. Flaxman had gone to Carrara in 1792, to choose marble for Lord Hervey's Fury of Athemas, and returned in 1794, on his journey home to England, in order to choose marble for his monuments to William Collins and Lord Mansfield. On the back of the first letter is a short note from Anne Flaxman to Mrs Clark.
