BEIN Roll Map 194: Imperfect: somewhat brittle, chipped, torn in places, with minimal loss of map image. Joined sheets measure 100 x 109 cm. Mounted on linen. In manuscript on verso: Jefferys's Map of New England 1755.
BEIN 2003 Folio 85: Imperfect: 2 sheets wanting (northwest and southwest). No. 18 of 45 maps bound together with binder's spine title: Atlas of America; ms. table of contents. Bookplate: Robinson. Bookplate of Paul Mellon.
Notes
First edition, second issue according to Stevens & Tree. Spelled "Conecticut" in title (although Stevens gives spelling as "Connecticut"); "Fort Frederik" inset; and Newport and Providence counties marked in Rhode Island. Reissued circa 1759 according to McCorkle, who identifies Braddock Mead, alias John Green, as the cartographer.
Relief shown pictorially.
Prime meridian: London and Ferro. Coordinates converted by cataloger to express longitude as measured from the Greenwich meridian.
Scale estimated from horizontal bar scale given in English miles.
"November 29, 1755 published according to Act by Thos. Jeffreys Geographer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales near Charing Cross."
Includes compilation data and insets of "Fort Frederik," scale approximately 1:1,680 and "A Plan of Boston Harbor from an Accurate Survey," scale approximately 1:150,000.
