Summary
Comedy is part of the fabric of life, and laughter is as essential as oxygen. For as long as there have been performing arts, there has been comedy. But on film, it has evolved into a genre of many parts. Filmmakers have taken wildly different approaches. From the silent era onwards, film comedy has encompassed slapstick, screwball, razor sharp satire, the romcom, bickering odd couples, spoofs, and national variations on what we find funny. But what remains true of all these categories, is that great comedy reveals so much about the human condition.
