Summary
A new look at the trajectory and legacy of Gregori Warchavchik, the pioneer of modernist architecture in Brazil In the year in which the centenary of São Paulo's Modern Art Week is celebrated. The book reviews the trajectory of architect Gregori Warchavchik, pioneer of modernist architecture in Brazil. Born in Ukraine, Warchavchik was a young architect in 1923 when he migrated to Brazil. Upon settling in São Paulo, he married Mina Klabin, sister-in-law of Lasar Segall, and came into contact with the circle of artists and intellectuals focused on discussing Brazilian culture in the 20th century people like Tarsila do Amaral, Mário de Andrade , Oswald de Andrade and Flavio de Carvalho, among others. The house he designed for his family, opened in 1928 on Santa Cruz Street and today listed as a historical heritage site, was the first built in the country according to modernist architectural postulates. In his projects, he also designed the internal furniture, as well as elements such as railings, gates and lamps. Organized by architect Silvia Segall, The Arrival of Modern presents a selection of Warchavchik's main projects, from the house on Santa Cruz Street to club projects from the late 1950s, bringing together built works, unexecuted projects and furniture designs. The book thus shows both his character as a pioneer of modernism and the way in which he adapted to the transformations of time and the market, also acting as an entrepreneur and builder. The work features texts by Ivo Giroto, from FAUUSP, the architect Carlos Warchavchik, Gregori's grandson, and Maria Cecilia Loschiavo, who discusses the architect's furniture design. The volume also features an interview with Paulo Mendes da Rocha who humorously recalls their coexistence during the renovation of Clube Paulistano , as well as a large collection of photographs, drawings, plans and sketches that reveal inventiveness, innovation and maturation of the architect's work over time. Supported by extensive image research and texts that seek to understand its theme from different points of view, The Arrival of the Modern takes a new look at the trajectory of Gregori Warchavchik in his complex career, analyzing with objectivity and passion his importance and his legacy in São Paulo and Brazilian architecture.
