A true and perfect inventorie of the goods and chattels of John Grey Esq., late of the Howick in the county of Northumberland, deceased, taken by us, hereunder subscribing, this fifth day of July 1709 : manuscript.

The inventory begins with his "apparell, purse, watch, swords and pistols, and furniture for his pad." Then several rooms are defined by color: the "blue room," whose contents include "blue curtains" and "blue hangings," and a "gray room," which contains at least three pairs of "curtains," followed by a "striped room," which features "printed curtains" and "6 turkey work chairs." Further indications of relative prosperity occur throughout the inventory. In the "high granary," there are "two servants' bedsteads," and elsewhere, there is to be found a "silver tankard & 5 silver spoons," a "damask table cloth & 1 dozen damask napkins," an abundance of bedding, and a kitchen stocked with the likes of "4 spits ... 3 dozen pewter plates." Included in this inventory are "51 milk ewes," "45 lambs," "12 swine," "6 kine," and "6 calves." Also, John Grey seems to have attended to his inner life, judging by the presence "in his own closet" of "133 books--05.00.00." His total wealth is initially estimated at "[£]514.03.09," then reduced on "15th May 1670" to the sum of "[£]469.00.8."
