José Julio Sarria, political activist from San Francisco, California who, in 1961, became the first openly gay candidate for public office in the United States.
Summary
Scripts, typescript and autograph manuscript, corrected, of nine musicals performed by Sarria in drag from the late 1950s through early 1960s, most at the Black Cat bar at 710 Montgomery Street in San Francisco, California. With one black-and-white photograph of Sarria in costume. Accompanied by one typed letter, signed, dated 2000, from Sarria to Bruce Lyall concerning the scripts.
