Biographical / Historical Note

Hiram Bingham III (1875-1956) graduated from Yale University in 1898 and was an American academic, explorer, and politician recognized for publicizing the existence of Machu Picchu.

José Calixto Pacheco Porras (1852-1919) was a Peruvian composer and teacher noted for his interest in Andean folk music, in particular música cusqueña and música incaica.

This bound collection of piano music includes printed sheet music and lyrics for "Viracocha" (No. 4), a yaraví for the piano (from Pacheco's "El Lucero" album, 4 pages, in Spanish); manuscript sheet music for "Canal de Panama" (Comp. 47, waltz, 6 pages), "Música Nacional"/"Tacna y Arica" (Comp. 43, paso doble, 4 pages), "Música Incaica"/"Atahuallpa" (Comp. 42, marcha majestuosa, 2 pages), and "Cancion Incaica (del drama Yahuarhuacca)" (Comp. 38, 2 pages, in Spanish and Quechua); autograph lyrics, signed, for "Cancion Incaica" (2 pages, in Spanish and Quechua); an undated profile of Pacheco with a picture (1 page, in Spanish); a dedication page to Hiram Bingham (in Spanish); and 1 autograph letter, signed and undated, to Hiram Bingham, from D.S. (David Stanley) Smith, regarding Pacheco's music (in English). The pages containing Smith's letter and the dedication from Pacheco are stamped "Hiram Bingham." The pages of Pacheco's music are stamped with: "Calixto Pacheco, compositor de musica y profesor de piano" and sometimes "Propiedad del autor." Several pages are also blind stamped with an emblem featuring the words "Republica Peruana" around a coat of arms.
