Biographical / Historical Note
Joseph Earl Sheffield (1793-1882) was an American railroad magnate and philanthropist, and resident of New Haven, Connecticut. Among other gifts to Yale University he provided a building and an endowment for the Yale College scientific department in 1858, which was named the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale College in his honor in 1861.
Summary
Autograph letters and writings, newspaper and magazine articles, portrait prints, and other memorabilia by and about Joseph E. Sheffield. Includes correspondence with family members and business associates. Much of the material relates to the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University. Correspondence and printed material dated after Sheffield's death includes condolence letters to his widow, Maria St. John Sheffield, and tributes to Joseph E. Sheffield. The material was bound in two volumes by Sheffield's daughter Josephine Earl Sheffield Porter, wife of John Addison Porter. A typed description of the history of the material, signed by Amelia Daggett Sheffield ("Mrs. George St. John Sheffield") is bound in the front of the second volume.
