Biographical / Historical Note
Eslanda Goode Robeson (1896-1965) was an anthropologist, journalist, women's rights advocate, human rights activist, and writer. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Columbia University (1920) and later took anthropology classes at the University of London and the London School of Economics; she earned her Ph.D. in anthropology from Hartford Seminary circa 1945. In 1941 she cofounded and led the Council on African Affairs, which lobbied against colonialism in Africa, and represented the group as a delegate observer to the United Nations convention in 1945 and at the All-African Peoples Conference in Ghana in 1958. Her published works include the books Paul Robeson, Negro (1930), African Journey (1945), and American Argument (1949, with Pearl S. Buck), as well as articles.
Summary
Signed original typescript draft of African Journey (New York: John Day Company, 1945) with autograph leaves and approximately 585 black-and-white photographs laid in (box 1); as well as galley proofs, signed, with corrections (box 2).
