Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle (1693-1768) was a British politician. He served as Prime Minister from 1754-1756 and 1757-1762.
Summary
Collection of manuscript correspondence and documents relating to Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle. Includes autograph manuscript letters, signed, between Newcastle and Henry Bilson-Legge discussing financial and legal matters relating to the British government; Bilson-Legge’s role as Chancellor of the Exchequer; and the political and social issues involved in creating a new title for Bilson-Legge’s wife, Mary Hill, Countess of Hillsborough. Also includes manuscript correspondence and documents, dated circa 1600s-1700s, including manuscript letters discussing legal matters in Parliament; printed orders to pay, completed in manuscript, for duties on the sale of imported goods; matters related to the Treasury; and documents pertaining to political and social matters in Northumberland, dated 1814-1845.
