Biographical / Historical Note
Charles Shephard Holbrook (1856-1928) was a life-long resident of Norwich, Connecticut. Summary
Bound volume used by Charles Shephard Holbrook to record pharmaceutical recipes while training to be a druggist, written in his own hand. Recipes include beauty products, colognes, and treatments for a variety of illnesses and medical conditions. The first section is an alphabetical index to the recipes contained in the following pages numbered 1-125. Titles of recipes are in English, names of ingredients are a mix of Latin and English, and measurements are recorded using apothecary symbols for weight or volume. Some pages indicate recipes were copied from publications, including the American Journal of Pharmacy and New Remedies. Additional enclosed recipes written on scraps of paper may not be written by Holbrook and were added at a later date. One loose recipe is dated 1897.
