Summary
Holograph manuscript diary of a Civil War soldier in Company G of the 27th Ohio Regiment. Atwell briefly describes his enlistment and three month service at Camp Denison near Cincinnati in the spring of 1861; under the heading, "Account of my 3 years Enlistment," he covers the period between his reinlistment in July of the same year and March of 1862. These entries contain descriptions of troop movement, maneuvers, and camp life, primarily in Missouri. The final entry is dated 1862 Mar 18, shortly after the battle of New Madrid, Missouri. According to several entries, Atwell transcribed the diary from his pocket journals. The front paste-down contains note, "Book No. 1."
