Biographical / Historical Note
The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture was founded in 1946 as a summer residency program for artists. An on-campus lecture series was established in 1952, and with the exception of 1962, when Skowhegan was not in session, lectures have been given every year and continue to this date.
The recorded lectures were compiled as an audio collection and made available by the Skowhegan School to a number of libraries and museums including the Archives of American Art; the Ryerson Library of the Art Institute of Chicago; Colby College Museum of Art; the Research Library of the Getty Research Institute; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Clark Art Institute; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; as well as the Arts Library at Yale.
Summary
Over 500 audio recordings on compact discs of lectures presented to the students of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture by resident and visiting faculty including important visual artists, as well as poets, architects, choreographers, composers, historians, journalists, curators. While the talks were originally intended for students and other artists, speakers often address broader issues and offer both philosophical and practical advice.
