البداية: "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم. المقالة الأولى 'في ذكر الأدوية المفردة'. ونذكرها على حرف المعجم، لنفرّق ما يضطر إلى شرحه من أفعالها وطبعها، فنقول: أقوى الأدوية منها، وهي الحرارة والرطوبة واليبوسة والبرودة، ومنها ثانية تابعة لهذه لا يختصّ فعلها بعضو، فنذكرها هنا. ما يحتاج إليه من صناعة الطب، فنقول: الدوى المحلل ما يهيئ المادة للتبخير، والملطّف ما يرفق قوامها، والجمالي [والجالي] ما يزيل الرطوبة من سطح العضو، والمنضج ما يعدّل أقوام الخلط ويهيئه للدافعة، والمفتّح ما ينفذ في المجاري فيخرج المادة السادّة ..."
