Barnett contain sacred vocal music and other vocal music by Barnett, 1859-1886 and undated, including autograph manuscript scores, scores and parts copied by Hendrick and unidentified copyists, and published music. Some music is accompanied by autograph manuscript notes by Hendrick about performance, editing, and publication, or by printed performance programs. Also present are additional autograph manuscript notes by Hendrick about Barnett’s music, undated; music notebooks written by Hendrick while a student of Barnett, 1873 and undated; concert programs and newspaper clippings about performances of music by Barnett, 1860-circa 1885; and an autograph letter signed, from Hendrick to Eva Judd O’Meara, Yale University music librarian, presenting manuscript music by Barnett, 1923 June 13.

Biographical / Historical
James G. Barnett (died 1885) (Yale 1867 PhD Hon) composer, conductor, and organist, emigrated from England to Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1845. Barnett was organist at Center Church, Hartford, Connecticut, circa 1845-1867, and conductor of the Beethoven Society, Hartford, Connecticut, 1857-1874. After moving to New Haven, Connecticut, circa 1875, Barnett was organist at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, New Haven, and later at Second Congregational Church, Fair Haven, Connecticut.

Jane B. Hendrick studied music with James G. Barnett in the 1870s and later edited his music for publication.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections.
