|a Edith Wright Schulze (1892-1990) emigrated from England to the United States in 1914. She lived in Free Acres, a utopian community in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, with her husband Max A. Schulze, who had emigrated from Germany in 1907. The Free Acres Association was founded in 1910 by New York lawyer Bolton Hall, according to the single-tax principles of the American economist Henry George.

|a The papers contain snapshot, formal, and group photographs, postcards, personal papers, and some documentary material on the Free Acres Association kept by resident Edith Schulze. Included are Max A. Schulze's World War I era government-issued identification cards; holiday cards sent to the Schulze family from artist Will Crawford and other friends; and more than 100 photographs of people and places, including Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, and Meerane, Germany; most of the photographs are uncaptioned. The Free Acres Association material includes an ink and watercolor map of Free Acres drawn in 1939 by Eudoxia and Walter L. Brown, with a key identifying homes of the residents; copies of anniversary commemorative publications from 1930, 1935, and 1960; snapshots of the exterior of the Schulze home; and a 1930 group photograph of residents by William Armbruster (1865-1955).
