Lettered below the title, six lines of verse in three sections: Disguis'd thro' life, a layman at [the] block, My headless trunk resumes [the] monkish frock. Doom'd for my crimes in pilgrimage to roam. With weary steps I seek my native home, Where vanity inscribes my Father's tomb, But Justice now denies my carcase room.

Provenance
Gift of Joseph Verner Reed (Yale 1926) to the Yale Library, 1958. Portions were transferred to Lewis Walpole Library 1960. For other items from this gift refer to Beinecke Library's GEN MSS 1000.
George Steevens bequeathed this collection to William Windham (1750-1810). At Windham's death, the collection was put up for sale on 20 July 1810 and was bought in by Mrs. Windham at 292 guineas; by descent through the Windham family; Sotheby's, 17 February 1919 to Dyson Perrins for £400; Sotheby's sale including Property of the Late C.W. Dyson Perrins, Esq., 11 June 1959, lot 100 purchased by Maggs Bros. for W.S. Lewis for £1300.
Summary
In a graveyard with tombstones and sarcophagi, a headless ghost in a monk's robes (crucifix and rosary hanging round his neck) carries his head in his left arm as he walks left toward a sarcophagus inscribed "This monument was erected by Simon Lord Fraser of Lovat &c. &c."; the lefy side is also inscribed "To the memory ofThomas Lord Fraser of Lovat."
