Biographical / Historical Note
Benjamin Spencer Catlin (1837-1871) was born in Haddam, Connecticut, the eldest son of Benjamin Hopkins Catlin (1801-1880) and Amelia Deborah Spencer Catlin (1811-1883), and raised in Meriden, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale in 1859, and from the Yale Medical Department in July 1862. In August 1862, he was appointed as an Assistant Surgeon in the 2nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and served during the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, until he mustered out in May 1863. In August 1863, he was appointed a Surgeon in the 21st New York Cavalry Regiment and mustered out of service in Denver, Colorado, in October 1865. After the war, Catlin established a medical practice in Troy, New York. He later suffered from neuralgia and died while visiting his brother, William Hopkins Catlin (1842-1921), in Barton County, Missouri.

Portraits of Benjamin Spencer Catlin and others, circa 1850-circa 1900.
A ninth plate ambrotype, lacking a case, created by J. Hart Rodgers in New Haven, Connecticut, is a bust portrait of Catlin in July 1858.
A half plate tintype, with a brass mat, depicts a full-length studio portrait of Catlin posed standing and wearing a United States Army uniform with another army officer posed sitting, circa 1862-1865. The collection also includes a painted profile portrait of Catlin based on the tintype created by an unidentified artist, circa 1900.
The collection includes a sixth plate daguerreotype in a half case, which depicts a bust portrait of an elderly woman wearing eyeglasses, circa 1850, as well as unrelated case cover.
