Edwin J. Beinecke (1886-1970, Yale 1907), Frederick W. “Fritz” Beinecke (1887-1971, Yale 1909S), and Walter Beinecke (1888-1958, Yale 1910), sons of Bernhard and Johanna Beinecke of New York; all three were officers in the Sperry & Hutchinson company and benefactors of Yale University. Summary
A group portrait of Edwin J. Beinecke, Frederick W. Beinecke, and Walter Beinecke, by Franklin Chenault Watkins. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed at the upper left corner: "F Watkins / 1965." Edwin and Frederick Beinecke are shown seated at a table inside the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, with Walter Beinecke standing at their proper left; one of the library's distinctive marble and granite walls is behind them. Representations of the brothers' and the library's holdings also appear in the portrait, such as, on the table, books and a crystal vase bearing a likeness of Robert Louis Stevenson to reflect the collecting interests of Edwin J. Beinecke, and a map, papers, and the words "Lewis & Clark" to suggest William Clark's field notes from the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) and Frederick Beinecke's collecting interest in Western Americana.
