Born in Freiburg, Germany in 1940, Montfort began his photographic career working as a photojournalist for German serials and newspapers including Stern, Quick, and Bild am Sonntag. A long friendship with Bukowski, starting in the late 1970s, led to collaborations including Horsemeat (Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1982), Shakespeare Never Did This (Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1979), and The Wedding (San Pedro: Brown Buddha Books, 1986). Montfort died in 2008 in Germany. 520 Black-and-white photographs of jazz musicians performing at concerts and rehearsals, likely in Germany. Photographs are primarily candid portraits of individual instrumentalists, singers, and band leaders, in performance or posing with instruments. Some group photographs are included. Musicians include Louis Armstrong, Josephine Baker, Art Blakey, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, and others. Musical ensembles include the Benny Goodman Orchestra, the Bey Sisters, the Duke Ellington Band, the Jimmy Giuffre 3, and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
