This study explores the changing social ideas that have determined wages for women during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It investigates how wage exists as a social construct that influences the way women are compensated for their work, creating the boundaries between what is deemed appropriate for women to earn in comparison to men. The book calls attention to the role gender has played in the economy and proposes a new understanding of a 'social wage' as a way to erase the differences between a man's and a woman's wage.
