"Halverwege de achttiende eeuw is Europa in de ban van de opgravingen in Italië. De schoonheid van de klassieke kunstschatten die bovenkomen, slaan in als een bom. De classic beauties worden dé inspiratiebron voor kunstenaars en zullen een eeuw lang de smaak bepalen. In de kunsten, vooral de beeldhouwkunst, wordt het naakte lichaam herontdekt. Kunstenaars en jonge Europese aristocraten gaan op Grand Tour, een maandenlange reis om de klassieke opgravingen en kunstwerken met eigen ogen te zien. Ook Goethe en de 'graaf en gravin van het Noorden', de latere Russische tsaar Paul I en Maria Fjodorovna, ondernemen de tocht naar Italië. In de Eeuwige Stad ontmoeten ze beroemde schilders en beeldhouwers als Pompeo Batoni, Anton Raphael Mengs, Angelika Kauffmann en de beroemde Antonio Canova. In 'Classic Beauties' volgt de lezer de Italiëgangers en de levensverhalen van de belangrijkste neoclassicistische kunstenaars. Door deze verhalen én de vele illustraties ontstaat een levendig beeld van een bijzonder tijdvak. Naast Paul en Maria Fjodorovan ondernam ook hun dochter, de Nederlandse koningin Anna Pavlovna, de tocht naar Italië, samen met haar dochter Sophie en zoon Alexander. Ook van die reis doet dit boek verslag".
