During the Crimean War, Seymour commanded the HMS Cumberland and HMS Pembroke in the Baltic Sea. He served as Third Naval Lord from 1866 to 1868. 545 Sir George Francis Seymour (1787-1870), Royal Navy officer, became commander-in-chief of the Pacific Station in 1844 May. In 1845, Seymour deployed the HMS Collingwood to Valparaíso, Chile, with orders to report on the Oregon boundary dispute; in 1846, he ordered the HMS Fisgard from the Pacific Station to protect British individuals from American settlers. Seymour was married to Georgiana Mary Berkeley Seymour, with whom he had 3 sons, Francis Seymour, Henry Seymour, and William Seymour, and 4 daughters, including Laura Williamina Seymour. 520 Autograph letters and manuscript copies of letters and papers pertaining to George Francis Seymour and efforts of the Royal Navy in regard to California and Mexico, 1844-1846, and undated, likely kept by son Henry Seymour. In an autograph letter, unsigned, to Henry Seymour, commander of the HMS Carysfort, George Seymour writes of a rupture between the United States and Mexico, of the Tyler-Texas Treaty, and of his concern that the U.S. might conquer California, 1844 June 29. An autograph letter, signed, from daughter Laura Seymour to Henry Seymour communicates her and mother Georgiana Mary Berkeley Seymour’s arrival at the Falkland Islands, 1844 November 17. A subsequent autograph letter, signed, from George Seymour to Henry Seymour notes Georgiana Seymour’s living situation at Valparaíso, Chile, 1845 July 2. 520 A manuscript dispatch from George Seymour recommends a British consul at Mazatán to facilitate trade between British and Mexican merchants, circa 1846.
