Many group portraits include Holland with African American men and women as well as performing with other African American musicians. Photographs also include portraits of African American and white musicians and patrons without Holland as well as a publicity portrait of Anita Dare, probably a stage name for a woman who performed at the Club Playboy. 520 Exterior photographs of city streets in Alaska, probably at Anchorage and Fairbanks, include discrete groups of images of Eskimos and others watching dog sleighs as well as photographs of a parade. Born Roscoe Conklin Simmon Holland in Kerens, Texas, he attended Prairie View College before service in the United States Navy, 1940-1946. After a discharge for bad conduct in 1946, Holland played bass with the music group 4 Beats of Rhythm in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. In 1951, he moved to Alaska and performed as a solo act playing piano and singing at night clubs in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Seward. He also owned the Club Playboy at Fairbanks, 1959-1961. In 1961, the Dooto Record company released his album, "For a Piece," followed by two albums released by Rand Records: "Beyond the Reef" issued approximately 1961 and "Roscoe" in 1978. He toured Alaska again in 1974-1975. Holland married four times with three of the unions ending in divorce: Elzner Flagg from October 1942 to July 1943, Mildred Thompson from January 1948 to December 1951, Naomi Key Jones (born approximately 1921) from October 1952 to August 1955, and Lois Elaine Morgan Warnecke (born approximately 1929) from September 1958 until his death.
