|a On 24 July, 2010, 21 people died and over 500 were injured at the Love Parade event in Duisburg, Germany. This annual music event, which was held in different German cities, started in 1989 and had attained high levels of global popularity with audiences of over a million. This disaster was not the first of its kind and there have been many disasters involving crowds at events in subsequent years which have resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, including, most recently, at the Astroworld Festival in November 2021. Tragedies like this challenge the organisers of such events to scrutinise their practice and review their operations. Thus, crowd management is now a necessary skill for professional event managers and the development of international industry guidance in the form of ANSI ES1.9-2020 Crowd Management published by the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA) and Event Safety Alliance (ESA) in July 2020 supports events managers to produce safer events and develop comprehensive plans for effective crowd management. This case study gives students the opportunity to develop their understanding of crowd management theory and apply Still's DIME-ICE model as set out in the ANSI ES1.9-2020 Crowd Management standard using the case study of the Love Parade disaster.
