The "frère mendiant" was a 14th-cent. Franciscan whose Spanish travel narrative, edited by Jiménez de la Espada, was published in 1877 under title: Libro del Conosçimiento. The present work contains the African portion (sections XLV-mid LXXII). This is preceded by a short extract from the French account of a voyage made by Jehan de Bethencourt in 1402, Histoire de la premiere descouuerte et conqueste des Canaries, by Pierre Bontier and Jean Le Verrier, originally edited by Bergeron in 1630 (later by Margry under title Le Canarien in his 1896 publication La conquête et les conquérants des Iles Canaries).

The Spanish text (leaves [11-27]) has special t.p., which reads: Libro del conosçimiento. De todos los reynos e tierras e señorios que son por el mundo. Los reynos e tierras de Africa.
