In 1792 he met William Cowper, who encouraged him to publish his poems, which he did as Sonnets and other Small Poems (1797). He also became a prolific editor, editing such works as Nugae antiquae: a miscellaneous collection of papers by Sir John Harington, selected by the late Henry Harington, and newly arranged, with illustrative notes, 2 vols. (1804). His poetry editions include Sharpe's Works of the British Poets (1805-8), published in forty-two volumes, with a supplement in six more volumes; Dryden's Fables from Boccaccio and Chaucer, collated with the best editions (2 vols., 1806); and Horace Walpole's Royal and Noble Authors, Enlarged and Continued (1806), with many portraits. He also edited Harleian Miscellany (1808-13); Reliques of Ancient English Poetry. By Bishop Percy (1812); Cooke's Translation of Hesiod for the Greek and Roman Poets (1813); Ritson's Select Collections of English Songs, with their Original Airs (1813); and Heliconia: a Selection of English Poetry between 1575 and 1604 (1815). Park was also a collector, especially of English poetry and of portraits of poets. 520 Manuscripts, in multiple hands, of several hundred scraps of notes, both printed and handwritten, pertaining to Park's research for his enlargement of Horace Walpole's Catalogue of Royal and Noble Authors. Many scraps of paper contain bibliographic information on the publications of various nobility. Other items include newspaper clippings of publications of noble authors, including that of John Lord Sheffield's Observations on the project for abolishing the slave trade; printed and handwritten death notices, obituaries, and inscriptions; biographical notes on various noble authors; scraps of verses found in manuscripts such as Cotton Vespasian and Sloane MS 1303, including one titled The countesse of Pembroke's passion; and numerous lists of noble authors, including one organized by death date from 1530-1800. The collection also includes verses, handwritten and printed, by noble authors; on several occasions when the names of nobility have been left blank, Park has written in their names. Many other scraps are from book dealers' catalogs, and annotated in Park's hand. The collection also incudes several quires from Park's 1806 publication, titled A catalogue of royal and noble authors of England, Scotland, & Ireland; with lists of their works: by the late Horatio Walpole, earl of Orford, enlarged and continued to the present time; and a handwritten copy of a review of the work. 520 The collection also contains other items, such as the printed title page from Treatise shewing the intimate connection that subsists between agriculture and chemistry, by the earl of Dundonald; a printed advertisement for a subscription for printing The connoisseur's companion, or, a guide to collectors, with a receipt signed by Thomas Park; and a collection of newspaper clippings regarding the election of William Grenville to the Oxford chancellorship in 1809. 546 In English. 500 Many of the papers are laid into four notebooks; the remainder are loose. 524 Thomas Park, Memoranda.
