John C. Mitzel (1948-2013)

John Carl Mitzel was an American writer, publisher, bookseller, and activist who was prominently involved in the Boston LGBTQ community beginning in the 1970s. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mitzel attended Boston University and helped to organize Boston’s first gay pride parade in 1971. He was a founding member of the Fag Rag collective, which published the newspaper Fag Rag, and was a regular contributor to the Philadelphia Gay News, Gay Community News (Boston), and The Guide (Boston). Mitzel operated the Boston branch of Toronto’s Glad Day Bookshop from 1985 until 2000, when he closed the store and opened the bookstore and publisher Calamus Books. He also founded Stonewall Distributors, a gay book and magazine distributor, and Manifest Destiny Press. In addition to his writing and activism for gay rights, Mitzel was also an advocate for the decriminalization of pedophilia and pederasty. He wrote extensively on the subject, served as editor for the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) newsletter, and advocated for and corresponded with men incarcerated for sex crimes. He died on October 4, 2013 in Arlington, Massachusetts.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit. Information included in the Description of Papers note and Collection Contents section is drawn from information supplied with the collection and from an initial survey of the contents. Folder titles appearing in the contents list below are often based on those provided by the creator or previous custodian. Titles have not been verified against the contents of the folders in all cases. Otherwise, folder titles are supplied by staff during initial processing. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
