Thomas W. Streeter collection of Texas manuscripts
Scope and Contents
The Thomas W. Streeter Collection of Texas Manuscripts is divided into three sections: I. Personal Files, 1787-1882 (WA MSS S-498); II. Signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, 1820-1852 (WA MSS S-499); and III. Texas Subjects, 1818-1864 (WA MSS S-500). The collection consists of autographs, letters, land claims, court papers, financial documents, public documents, narratives and histories, recording the history and development of Texas. Each section is arranged alphabetically by the author, item title, or subject.
Section I, Personal Files, contains a wide range of documents including much correspondence between important figures in the early history of Texas, the movement to declare independence from Mexico, and the military conflict between Texas rebels and Mexican officials. Principal correspondents in this collection include Stephen F. Austin, Moses Austin Bryan, Henry Smith, James Kerr, Ramón Músquiz, Mier y Teran, Ira Randolph Lewis, and Thomas Jefferson Chambers.
Section II, Signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence is essentially a collection of miscellaneous papers that document the autographs of 37 signatures to the Texas Declaration of Independence. Section III, Texas Subjects, consists of files arranged around places, institutions and episodes of early Texas history.
The Appendix, Streeter's "Catalogue of Texas Manuscripts," contains two notebooks in which Thomas Streeter recorded the description and provenance of each item in the above collections. The catalogues are divided into the same three sections as listed above, each section arranged alphabetically. Some items listed in the notebooks have been cataloged separately (e.g. the Thomas Falconer diary and account).

Opening Hours
Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
