Cohen, Marvin, 2006 January 19
Scope and Contents
Marvin Cohen was born and raised in New Haven, and, after college, returned to the city to open a nursery. Asked by Art Spiegel (creator of the graphic novel Maus) to design a Holocaust memorial for New Haven. Cohen offered a simple design, featuring a Star of David and thirteen evergreen trees. His sketch was supplemented with work by architect Gus Franzoni, and the memorial placed on Whalley Avenue near Edgewood Park. Cohen describes the difficulties in finding an appropriate place for the memorial, and a number of challenges from within the Jewish community regarding the propriety and design of the monument. Cohen shares a number of his scrapbooks and his memorabilia with the interviewer.
