"Gregor von Nazianz (* ca. 329/330, ab 372 Bischof, † etwa 390) verbindet klassische Rhetorik und Christentum; er gilt als christliches Pendant zu Demosthenes. In den Akten des Konzils von Chalzedon (451) wird er erstmals als 'der Theologe' bezeichnet, was sein Werk postum würdigt. Über die Wesensgleichheit von Gott Vater und Sohn, die das Konzil von Nizäa (325) festlegt, und über die Gottheit des Heiligen Geistes werden im 4. Jahrhundert innerchristliche Auseinandersetzungen ausgetragen. Zwischen 379 und 381 formuliert Gregor in Konstantinopel, einer Stadt, in der sich zunächst alle Kirchen in nicht-nizänischen Händen befinden, seine Reden 20 bis 41. Erst vor einer bescheidenen Zuhörerschaft, später auch in Gegenwart von Kaiser Theodosius I. lehrt und verteidigt Gregor den Glauben - unabhängig davon, ob er sich mit aktuellen Themen befasst oder eine Schriftstelle kommentiert. Die wortgewaltigen Ansprachen dokumentieren sein Vorgehen beim Kampf für das nizänische Dogma und um seine eigene Rolle in Konstantinopel. Dieser Band bietet die Reden 32 bis 37 in einer kommentierten deutschen Übersetzung nebst einer ausführlichen Einleitung."--
