A room with empty walls. A cube that must be surrounded almost entirely in order to enter. A black room, dim light, and twelve photographs inside. They are isolated, avoiding any kind of proximity towhatever has life. They are toxic images, they emanate terror. The photographs inside this cube refer to the houses where different Nazi leaders lived during their exile in Argentina. Images of the shell that kept them safe, the entrance to the intimacy of evil. Martín Bollati's interest is not to document the Nazi presence in the national territory or to denounce the impunity of its protagonists. His concern is about the tension between photography and its meaning, a meaning that can only be given by words. Did these photographs emanate terror before we knew the meaning of their referent? What other evidence do we have to say that Nazis lived there? We believe in photography as much as we believe in words. The documentary character of the former is subordinated to the reliance on the latter. Photography needs help. A room, the color black, the lighting, this text. Suggestive elements that reinforce the sinister nature of these images. But nothing would complete its task if we did not know the meaning of the houses. At the same time, meaning, like desire, is neither unique nor static. When Martin started the project, the word Nazism sounded distant. Today, in front of a dark room and in an electoral climate, these images are no longer the same..
