Summary
Mary Edith Durham was a British artist, anthropologist, and writer who became famous for her anthropological accounts of life in Albania in the early 20th century. Traveling extensively in the Balkans between 1900-1936, she worked for several relief organizations and became a champion of the Albanian mountaineers whose lands were coveted by neighboring nations. Her studies of Balkan ethnography led to a series of books, of which 'High Albania' is the best known and is still regarded as the best guide to the customs and society of the highlands of northern Albania.
