The open access (OA) movement, which seeks to make academic research freely available online to all who wish to access it, has presented significant challenges to traditional publishers of scholarly publications. OA advocates argue that research funded by taxpayers should be available to the public, while publishers argue that their services add value to academic publications and should be compensated. Tension between the need for public services to be available to all and the desire of private companies to earn a profit has long been a concern of the business community. Because the internet makes sharing of information much more economical than it was several decades ago, OA advocates have questioned the need for traditional publishers altogether, placing these companies' profitable business models in jeopardy.
