From the Colton Storm catalogue: "For the route covered, Clayton's guide was the best itinerary of the time. The author accompanied the pioneer band to Salt Lake in 1847 as the clerk or historian. He kept a careful record and description of the route and also kept a diary for himself and another for Heber Kimball. Shortly after he reached Salt Lake, he decided to use his materials for a guide book. He returned to Winter Quarters on October 21, 1847, and set about preparing a manuscript for the press. The Preface is dated March 13, 1848. Clayton's guide book was used extensively by successive waves of Mormon emigrants. John D. Lee, who accompanied the 1848 migration, mentions using the Clayton work. Lorenzo Snow had the pamphlet with him, for several of his place names are identical with Clayton's. Tipped in at the back is a Letter, signed, by Brigham Young, 1853 August 31, Salt Lake City, to Captain W. H. Hooper." (Graff 751, sold, Ayer 128.3 .C6 1848, substituted).
