A printed exchequer receipt, with the elements in square brackets completed in manuscript, and signed by M. Denbigh and Nic. Westbourne.
The duty was imposed under the 1693 Act to fund the ongoing War against France. In practice, it became a quarterly tax that had to be remitted to the Exchequer.
