Biographical / Historical Note
Richard A. (Dick) Keevil was a British colonial serviceman from 1942-1971. During the Second World War Keevil participated in the Chindits Special Forces in Burma as a platoon commander. In 1945 he became a development officer with the Colonial Office working on agricultural development and communication in Africa. He married in 1952 and, in 1958, relocated with his family to the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. He worked for the British Solomon Islands Protectorate Agriculture Department in Auki, Malaita to advance the cocoa industry before transfering to Honiara to develop education services within the department.
Keevil published articles in The Solomon Islands farmer and in local newspapers and presented radio broadcasts for the national radio network. He was instrumental in establishing the Solomon Islands National Agricultural Show in 1969, and several charities including the US Marine Veterans Memorial Association. He left government service in 1971, bought land and founded a riding school at Henderson, ten miles east of Honiara. In 1981 Keevil wrote his memoirs in two volumes before returning to live in Australia.
