Part of the Digital Himalaya project which was conceived of as a strategy for archiving and making available valuable ethnographic materials from the Himalayan region. Based at the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, the project was established in December 2000. From 2002 to 2005, the project moved to the Department of Anthropology at Cornell University and began its collaboration with the University of Virginia. From August 2011, Digital Himalaya is colocated at Cambridge and Yale Universities.

Summary
The data presented here is extracted from the National Census of Nepal 2001 CD produced by Nepal's Central Bureau of Statistics, allowing the findings of the 2001 Census of Nepal to be searched and downloaded in one of four standard formats (Excel, pdf, Text, and HTML formats). The Digital Himalaya team sorted census data for Nepal's 75 districts down to the Village Development Committee (VDC) level, of which they are over 3,900. Information is searchable by: economic activity, literacy, marital status, Religion, population (total population and number of houses), population (in 5-year divisions), and school status.
