Summary
"This book is intended chiefly for the young man, and is founded on the belief that an intelligent man, without technical knowledge of medicine, and without excessive attention to the care of his health, can still do much to keep himself in good condition. An intelligent man will desire to understand the reasons for his actions, and will demand some information regarding the processes of the body as a basis for undertaking the management of his health. Accordingly the book enters, not too deeply, into some of the important topics of physiology, but, not wishing to stray far from the practical, it makes no effort to be complete on the scientific side. It is a book on hygiene. Of the two great divisions of this subject, it is concerned almost entirely with what is called personal hygiene, though it contains a few allusions to the importance of public hygiene, the most promising science of the times. Public hygiene is the concern of the specialist, though the good citizen should be aware of its importance. But personal hygiene is the direct concern of every man, since he must be his own manager in matters of food and sleep, exercise and recreation, and other daily activities which are influential in determining the difference between good health and mediocre health"--Preface.
