Biographical / Historical Note
William D. Pickett was a Confederate Army officer from 1861 to 1865 and subsequently became a frontiersman and hunter in the American West.
Summary
Eleven autograph letters, signed, from William D. Pickett to George Bird Grinnell and T. E. Hofer. The letters concern the publication of Pickett's diaries. Grinnell published the diaries with Harper & Brothers in 1913 under the title Hunting at High Altitudes, as part of a series of books for the Boone and Crockett Club, a hunter-conservationist organization. In the letters, Pickett describes his life on the frontier, particularly his skill in hunting grizzly bears. He also briefly discusses his experiences with Tonkawa Indians and Western scenic landmarks. The letters are accompanied by typed transcripts.
