Summary
The collection consists of two autograph manuscript volumes kept by Samuel French, each measuring 32 cm. The earliest is dated 1806 and contains sixty-six pages of arithmetic lessons and exercises; it is bound in contemporary wrappers made from a hand-colored German engraving featuring military equestrian costumes. The second volume contains fifty pages and comprises a journal, ledger, and cash book recording financial accounts and attendance figures for the male and female students taught by Samuel French in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, between December 1810 and August 1811. French also recorded his personal expenses in the volume, which has patterned paper wrappers and was retailed by Philadelphia publisher David Hogan (1773?-1823). The books are accompanied by a writing quill possibly owned by French.
