Biographical / Historical Note
The United States declared war on Japan in 1941 following an attack by Japan on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Under authority granted by Executive Order 9066, issued in February 1942, the federal government incarcerated over 120,000 people of Japanese descent in American concentration camps.
The Poston Relocation Center, Arizona, was the largest American concentration camp operated by the United States War Relocation Authority during World War II.
Summary
Exterior group portraits of Japanese and Japanese American incarcerees at the Poston Relocation Center concentration camp, Arizona, 1944-1945. A group portrait created by Shigemi "Frank" Izuo shows a large group of unidentified incarcerated children, women, and men. Portraits by unidentified photographers include groups of chiefly female students in flower making courses instructed by "Mrs. Sakurai" in 1944 and 1945, and a sewing class instructed by "Mrs. Nakai" in 1945.
