Biographical / Historical Note
Clarence Mauck was born in Indiana in 1839 and served as a captain in the United States Army. When a group of Northern Cheyenne, led by the chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf, escaped from Fort Reno, Mauck was ordered to retrieve the fugitives. In October or November of 1878, Mauck returned the Cheyenne to Fort Reno.

Autograph letters, signed, telegrams, military orders, and manuscript copies of letters and telegrams from Mauck to other military personnel concerning the escape and subsequent pursuit of a group of Cheyenne Indians from Fort Reno, Indian Territory, 1878 September, following the group's relocation from Fort Robinson, Nebraska.
