Biographical / Historical Note
Townsend Miller (1912-1977) received his B.A. (1933) and Ph.D. (1937) from Yale University and his M.A. (1934) from Washington University. Miller worked as an instructor for the English Department at Yale University from 1938 to 1941. He died on May 20, 1977.
Summary
The Townsend Miller collection contains drafts of Miller's poetry and book on Spanish history The Castles and the Crown (New York: Coward-McCann, 1963). The poems consist of autograph manuscripts and typescripts (1931 and undated) and include: And Even I, Most Gentle Lord?; Good Friday Peace; In Dreams Upon the Sunny Shore; Leave Us Under the Wind; Out of the Waters; Slowly and With An Infinite Delay; Sonnet for C.B.T.; They Tell Me; The Wanderer; When Will the Heart Be Brave; and But the Young Leaves Are False. The collection also includes an autograph manuscript notebook with research notes and drafts of poetry (undated). The typescript for The Castles and the Crown is accompanied by a typed letter, signed to Norman Holmes Pearson from James W. Ellison (September 12, 1962).
