Biographical / Historical Note
Hannah Carner was active with the Philadelphia Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She served on the Executive Committee (1954) and as secretary for the Convention Committee (1960-1961). She also attended the National Convention as one of the delegates for Pennsylvania (1951, 1956, and 1960).
Summary
The collection contains correspondence, printed material, and photographs relating to Hannah Carner's involvement in civil rights organizations (in particular the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Correspondence is largely comprised of copies of outgoing letters (1960-1961) from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Convention Committee relating to the 52nd Annual Convention held in Philadelphia. The collection contains printed material, photographs, and an undated typescript report by Carner about National Association for the Advancement of Colored People conventions she attended and group portrait photographs from the 1951 and 1960 conventions. The collection also includes printed material published by other civil rights organizations collected by Carner such as the Socialist Workers Party (The Stalinists on the Waterfront; New York: Pioneer Publishers, 1947); U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (Civil Rights Digest; Spring 1974); Bucks County World Peace Fair (1962); Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation (Foundation Bulletins; 1966-1967); and American Federation of Labor (Tent City; undated). Other publications include Lenin on Engels (New York: International Publishers, 1935); The Day They Marched (Chicago: Johnson Publishing Company, 1963); and The Socialist (volume 26, no. 4, June 2000). Ephemera from an 80th birthday party held for Norman Thomas can also be found in the collection.
